Court
Here’s a thing I learned a long time ago… guys and girls don’t think about relationships the same way. Especially in college. So, when I caught the girl sitting next to me on the plane reading a magazine article on how to get out of the friend zone, I did something I never do – I got involved.

One look into her electric blue eyes and the darkness inside of me faded.
Light and hope radiated from her like a neon sign.

Guys like me know how to get the girl, but we rarely get to keep them.

Bianca
Girls like me fade into the background. Nice, quiet, smart girls without the latest trendy clothes. My friendship with Court started as an opportunity to get inside the male mind, but it turned into so much more.

His touch sent current coursing through my veins.
His kiss jolted my heart.

But here is something I learned a long time ago… you can’t force people to love you back. No matter how much you long for them.

Flying coach was bullshit. The crying babies and the cramped seats weren’t even the worst of it, although admittedly not a perk. The real problem with sitting in the back of the plane was the comradery among the other passengers. In first-class no one tried to chat about the weather or ask the dreaded “Are you visiting or returning home?”. No, in first class we sat in our large, reclining seats with plenty of leg room, cold drink on the tray table, laptop open, and we minded our own damn business.
I didn’t sit in first class because of some ego trip where I needed to flaunt my better than average salary around. I did it because I preferred the silence. Also, I traveled so much it was almost always a free upgrade. Not today.
At least I’d been lucky enough to snag an aisle seat. Unlike the girl sitting in 8B. She didn’t look up as I shrugged off my suit jacket and placed it with my carry-on bag in the overhead bin. She stared down at the magazine in her hands, a pen gripped in her mouth.
Pink lips were wrapped around the blue pen and her eyebrows were drawn together in deep concentration. The only indication I had that she knew her seat neighbor had arrived was the way she shielded the magazine with an elbow as I slid into my seat. Her stance reminded me of those smart kids who strategically placed their arm around the edge of the desk so that no one could cheat off their test answers.
Intrigued, I settled in and peeked over her arm and down at the glossy pages only catching the headline: How to Get Out of the Friend Zone and Land the Guy of Your Dreams. My eyes trailed up to the young woman so enthralled with such a ludicrous title and I studied her closer.
She was beautiful, but not in an in your face way. I definitely couldn’t see her being banned to the friend zone. Her blonde hair was piled up in a bun on the top of her head, face clear and tanned even in the dreary March weather we’d been having. A faded, oversized floral dress was worn over leggings and sparkly shoes completed a look that was a cross between a preppy sorority girl and an artsy free spirit. She dressed in a way that told me she didn’t know she was beautiful or if she knew, she just didn’t care enough to conform to a style.
Judging by her reading material I was sold on the first option.
As the other passengers filed into their seats, I found myself intrigued and unable to focus on anything but 8B. I glanced over politely, hoping she’d look up and make eye contact so I could get a better look at her. No luck. She kept her focus on the garbage reading material in front of her as the cabin doors were closed and the flight attendants prepared for departure. When we’d reached twenty thousand feet and she still hadn’t so much as side-eyed me, I gave up and pulled out my laptop to do some work.
I stared at the reports in front of me for five minutes, not reading a word, before I gave up and closed the laptop with a snap. She jumped, startled, and I turned to give her my attention. When her eyes finally found mine, I inhaled sharply.
Bright blue eyes were outlined with a heavy hand on the eyeliner or eyeshadow, whatever it was called, in a striking blue. I couldn’t decide if was a fashion statement or a fashion disaster, but her eyes held mine captive and my lips parted to speak, only no words came out. We stared for a moment too long, neither saying a word, until she glanced down at her exposed reading and flipped it shut.

Having cancer is an invitation to be touched. Doctors. Nurses. Sympathetic friends. An overbearing mother. For months, I dreaded having someone else’s hands on my body.
But now? Now I crave it. Especially with Clay staring at me like I’m the only one who can quench his thirst. I’d gladly be his water. The glass. Hell, I’d even be the ice cubes if he’d give me a few hours and a freezer.
“Um, will you tie me?” I give myself ten bonus points—five for speaking coherently and five for omitting the word “up” at the end.
He smiles and steps behind me, and my skin prickles in anticipation. Even my goose bumps want to be as close to him as possible. But none of that compares to the second his fingers brush the skin on my shoulders. I officially take back every curse word I aimed at Rebecca when I opened my suitcase.
I’m baking her a cake as soon as I get home.
“Is that too tight?” Clay’s voice is deeper, huskier, and damn if that’s not the sexiest thing I’ve heard in…ever. I want to say yes, so he’ll have to start over, but a girl only has so much self-control. He’d probably say something like “how do you want it?” and then I’d turn around and hump his leg because I’m all about hands-on demonstrations.
“It’s perfect.”
“Great. I’ll double-knot it so you can just slip it over your head next time.”
I’d be sad if it wasn’t for the light squeeze he gives my neck when he’s done. Committing that feeling to memory, I pull a tank top over my head and slide my feet into my sneakers, shoving all thoughts of molesting Clay out of my mind. “Where do you want to go first?”
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that?” The edges of his mouth tip up.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m the world’s worst Hawaiian.” I shoot playful daggers at him.
“Hey, you said it, not me.” He holds his palms out, proclaiming his innocence. “Thankfully, one of us came prepared. I was thinking of a short hike and then maybe some paddle boarding.”
It’s my turn to lift a hand. “The hike sounds fine, but one of us did not come prepared for paddle boarding. Unless you don’t mind going in circles.” His eyes crinkle as I simulate rowing with my stump.
“Don’t worry, this place has two-person paddle boards.” He pulls the keys to our rental Jeep from his pocket and twirls the ring around his finger. “Ready?”

JAMESON — ❝I hated this. I despised it. There were no words for the grief, the aching in my heart. I was betraying her. I had been ordered to break the trust she gave me, and all so Thomas and Elizabeth could follow the rules.

Two days ago, I had taken Soph to my cove. I kissed her. I held her hand. I shared with her more of me than anyone beyond Thomas and Elizabeth. I forced her to include me into her bubble and now I was popping it because it was the right thing to do. Why couldn’t I just explain it to her? I could trust her—I know I could. Soph was different than anyone else. Why couldn’t I just tell her?❞

MEET THE AUTHOR:
Natalie Barnes was born in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan on a rainy, September Thursday. She grew up on the Bay Mills Indian Reservation in Michigan’s eastern upper peninsula.

Married with children, she started writing as a way to have downtime for herself. Never planning on publishing until her first piece was finished. That’s when it all changed.

Not even four months after publishing, “Everything I Want,” she left her full time job as Accounts Payable and took the dive into continuing her desire for storytelling.

When she isn’t losing it with her characters, she’s jamming out or combing the backroads of the Upper Peninsula countryside. Blueberry picking to two-tracking and gathering; anything that has to do with the outdoors, she’s into.

Natalie also has an eye for indie films. Connecting with a screenwriter a couple years ago, there’s now a screenplay based on her first novel out there. She’ll continue to see where that goes and in the meantime, plans on having screenplays written for all her tales.

Always creating, always telling a tale one way or another.

MEET THE AUTHOR
Madalyn Thane (Candy Miller)
I live in western Montana with my husband of almost 20 years and our 15 year old son. We have one son up with the angels who will forever be seven years old. We have four dogs and two cats and quite often feel overrun. The inmates have definitely taken over the asylum.

I’ve been a reader for as long as I can remember. I’m almost never without some sort of reading material or reading device on my person at all times. I’m pretty introverted, incredibly awkward, and have a resting bitch face that rivals Colleen Hoover’s. So, yeah, I’m a lot of fun at parties.

One thing I require in all books, whether I’m reading them or writing them is a happily ever after. I hate cheating stories and can promise you’ll never get one of those from me. I am a huge fan of instalove, true love, and soulmates. Basically, I’m a romantic. And I’m damn proud.
