Blog Tour & Book Review - Bet on us by Rachel Higginson

SYNOPSIS

All Ellie Harris wanted was a life of her own.
In a shortsighted decision, she follows her high school boyfriend to college, only to get cheated on and then dumped. And to add insult to injury, her overprotective family is suddenly clinging to her again, fighting to control every part of her life.

Bad luck follows her hasty decision and when her roommate steals her identity and leaves town, Ellie is left to clean up a gigantic mess.

Fin Hunter insists Ellie owes him seven thousand dollars from an online poker game and he won't stop until he collects it. Determined to keep her family out of her life, Ellie agrees to work for Fin in his illegal online poker operation. He's given her six weeks to pay off the debt.

Soon sparks are flying between them and the only thing keeping her from falling for him is the debt she still owes and the money she doesn't have.

At the end of those six weeks, Ellie will have to pay the mistaken debt or bet that her feelings for Fin will be worth more than the money.

MY REVIEW

I got a copy of Bet on use for a blog tour in exchange for my honest review.

"I didn't know if it would be better or worse when he was done, I just knew that he was blwing through everything I though I wanted and needed like a tornado of change and I was helpless to stop it."

So imagine you come home, your furniture is gone, your roommate gone and I sexy serial killer demanding his money back which you don't even owe him.

Now the question is What would you do?

"My brothers used to make me play Trinity while they re-enacted every scene. It as like torture. Lennox was Neo, Grayson was always agent Smith and they made Beckett be Morpheus. My mom wouldn't even let me watch the movie because I was so little, but I still knew all the lines."

The two main characters in this book is Ellie Harris and Fin Hunter. I just loved Ellie and there is something about her innocence that makes the reader identify with her. Also I could truly identify with the over protective brother. Fin is this hot senior that is the star athlete. Ellie off course believe she is way out of his league. But that is not stopping her about fantasizing about him.  On the flip side of the coin their is Fin who is thinking his out of Ellie league.

The story line is great and the characters all of them are well written. You yearn to know what will happen next and so you just push forward. Ignoring the clock that say its 2 AM.

"and Ellie, if fin is offering his heart to you. It's just a formality because believe me when I say your already have it."

This is truly a good hearted love story, filled with innocence, first love, hope and all other emotions. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good love story, who remembered their first college love and to those who are still waiting for that love.

"And I just kept falling, harder, faster... forever, until finally I was in love with you and there was nothing else I could do about it."

I give Bet on us 4 Stars

I just can't wait to read book 2 in the series. Since the book just ended in the blue. I would really love to know what happens to these two.

Book Review - Jinxed by Donna Augustine

Synopsis

Karma, it’s what they call me and the very essence of who I am. When I died young, I was recruited by the agency that keeps the Universe running smoothly. As someone with a human past, most of my coworkers consider me inferior.

But not everyone. Something evil has been stalking me for centuries. It’s been biding its time, waiting for the moment when it will strike and it needs me to to do it.

Its methods of recruitment are tearing apart every aspect of my life. I’m slowly losing myself, both mentally and physically. I don’t know who I can count on but I'm finding out how much I'm willing to sacrifice to save the ones I care about.

Synopsis

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Karma book 1 in this series (if you read my first review you would have picked it up) So naturally I just couldn't wait to get into Jinxed see what happens. And boy was I in for a treat.

So let me first start of with saying I did my happy dance when we met "the Big guy". Serious who doesn't want to meet Santa. I will be first in line. Mother nature off course set loose a hurricane and wants to wipe out one whole continent. Death wears more colour than Fate. The Jinxes is even more devious than ever. Kitty we learn has wisdom and Lady Luck is not good at keeping secrets.  Murphy we see a softer side, Crow well just have to many crows.

Then oh yeah..... Cupid is up to his tricks and poor Karma and Fate is in for a ride. Since the rest of the office is staying clear of him.

"I'd wanted to meet Santa but not anymore. What if he knew I was on the naughty list"

This time around we meet the bad guys, the ones that is also in the universe Envy and Wrath.  And they play a very cruel trick on Karma to get her.

"I met Hitler"

"you tape me to that chair this instant1 I tried to rip the roll of tape from his hand but he wouldn't' let go"

Now this is one thing I can agree on with Karma, Fate sure as hell is touching her a lot for someone who isn't interested. Those two are each others Ying & Yang, Salt & Pepper, Fork & Knife. They are just made for each other. I just wish they would realise it. Everyone can see it even ME.

"to sum it up, fate was like the universe's experiment in extra credit. if the rest of us were a scoop of vanilla ice cream, he was a sundae with extra fudge and a cherry."

Going into Jinxed I had a few questions but leaving Jinxed I had even more. Will be a book three in this series?

Is Karma going to become part of the FOUR?

Were Karma and Fate lovers in one of her previous lives, why didn't they end up together that time, is that the reason why Fate doesn't want to get close to Karma?

"why did I feel like I remembered this? it was right there, a memory just out of reach. You've said that before. When?"

Just so many question that NEED to be answered.

This book and series has made me look at the "universe" in a whole different way. And when something goes wrong I would say out loud Murphy stop it, or real funny Jinxes. Luckily my husband understand me.

Jinxed is a great book to an even greater series.

I give Jinxed 5 Stars.

Excerpt:
After meeting with my Lords’ Council over breakfast and consuming a light dinner, I sat in the throne room as I regularly did and listened to the plights of my people. For the rest of the afternoon, I handed out advice and presented solutions as needed to the men and women who came before me. When I revived the old Hestian tradition of opening the great hall to my subjects, I expected to resolve quarrels of great magnitude involving large quantities of money and property, but I quickly learned that some of my people were so obstinate that they were unable to solve even the smallest disputes locally. In the space of two and a half grueling hours, I laid three conflicts centered on betrothals to rest and resolved six disagreements that involved livestock and property. Once those men and women filed out of the great hall, my herald addressed the last remaining fey in attendance.
“Kneel before the throne and state your concerns to the queen,” he directed.
An elderly Hestian man with closely cropped, gray-peppered carmine hair stepped forward and knelt before my throne as he had been commanded. He made the sign of the star to honor the four gods and their fey children, touched his head to the ground, and placed his outstretched arms flat on the pulsating floor tiles. While the first motion was customary amongst my people, the more submissive gesticulation piqued my interest since most male subjects simply bowed or kneeled in my presence based on their rank and our familiarity. However, as much as I wanted to indulge my curiosity about the man’s unusual supplication, he spoke before I could address it.
“The year after molten sand becomes silver glass the following will come to pass: The fire shall give its life’s blood to water, and the wind will rise to claim Hesta’s daughter.”
I furrowed my brow and opened my mouth to respond, but before I could ask the meaning of the man’s strange proclamation, he abruptly rose into a kneeling position and pulled a dagger from his satchel. My ladies in waiting screamed and flames formed in my hands as two knights stepped forward to subdue him, but they did not move swiftly enough. The man plunged the gleaming blade into his abdomen and fell face-forward onto the floor, which burned more brightly as his blood left his body and spilled onto the endlessly rippling surface. The knights quickly rolled the suicidal man onto his back and checked for a heartbeat.
“He is dead, your majesty,” one of the knights announced, obviously shaken by the sudden suicide.
“Please find out who he is,” I ordered, closing my hands to snuff out the flames. “Then report your findings to me and notify his family that he is dead.”
“Yes, your majesty,” they acknowledged.
As the knights lifted the man’s body and began to carry him out of the room, something caught my eye.
“Wait!”
The armor-clad men halted and I strode over to them, careful not to step in the blood that soiled my usually immaculate floor. Once I reached the trio, I pulled the dead man’s knife from its fleshy sheath. As I suspected, a vaguely familiar animal had been etched onto the hilt of the blade. A trio of tiny sapphires served as the scintillating eyes of the blue phoenix while its shining silver beak was open as if it had been mid-shriek when the artisan carved its likeness into the weapon.
“Thank you. Now, you may go.”
Once the knights resumed their gruesome task, I turned to face my ladies and made eye contact with Sera, whose naturally bronzed features were nearly as pale as the ivory lace on her dress.
“Sera, please find Esti and Amaia and ask them to meet me in my library.”
“Yes, your majesty,” she acknowledged with a curtsy before leaving the throne room, struggling to keep her gaze from resting on the trail of fresh blood beside her as she fled.
While the man who had died moments before clearly had no desire to end my life, my intuition still told me that a considerable threat was nigh… and that the two women’s guidance would be invaluable if I wanted to protect myself and my subjects from the imminent danger that had just begun to reveal itself.

~My Review~

I got the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review for the blog tour

Wow, wow, wow is what comes to my mind when I think of Karma.

"I run the agency Unknown Force of the Universe"

I really loved this book and as soon as you get the hang of it you can't put it down.  Let me start of with saying this. I love how Death and the Toothfairy plays golf once a week. How Lady Luck is a bit of a loose one. How Mother want to do something totally crazy. How The  Jinxess is 3 boys and Cupid being a love all and everyone guy. How The guards that only communicate with Karma and off course Fate. Yummy delicious fate.

"He pulled back suddenly and looked even more pissed off than before he'd kissed me."

Fate reaction towards Karma reminds me of kinder garden crushes where the boy would be mean to you cause he likes you. I love his and Karma relationship. I think in future books even more will be revealed. I do get the feeling that he has been watching Karma a lot longer then he pretends to when she was a human. I think they are soul mates. that's why none of Karma's other relationships has worked out in her past 10 lives because Fate wasn't there. (but now that's just how I feel)

"I still wanted him to want me. Why didn't he want me? I was a cute dead chick"

Karma the main character, get taken by death all to quickly, grasping to the life she had she makes a bad decision that seems like a curse but in the future will be a blessing in disguise. She grows and learns the truth but also bring up even more questions. Karma grows and with Fate they hunt down her killer.

"No. But I've seen souls who were fated to be together. Lifespan after lifespan, there is still a connection. I saw him look at you. Nothing. You're relationship with him was purely luck."

There isn't a boring moment in this book an I can't wait for Jinxes (book 2 in the series) I do hope in the next one we get to meet Santa. This book and series is one of the few I would love to see being made into a movie. it's also up on top with the Harry Potter and Divergent.

I give this book 5 stars

I do want to applaud the author, this was an amazing book and after reading this you can't help yourself to wonder about soul mates, karma, luck and murphy's law.

~Excerpt~

“No. Just you. Everyone has their own department. You are Karma.” He pointed toward me dramatically, the way someone would try and accent a meaning to a person who didn't know the language.
“I'm not sure I'm adequately suited for this position. Even for a month. I'm more of a “bygones be bygones” kind of person. Don't you need someone a bit more vengeful?”
He looked down at the file spread on his desk. “I would disagree. Your file said you would be an excellent candidate.”
“May I see that?” I asked, eying up said file on his desk. How much did Harold know about me? Everything? That was an uneasy feeling. Even the best of us had our secrets and even though I considered myself a decent human being, I didn't think I fell into the saintly category.
The file didn't look big enough for my entire life to be in it. It didn't even look thick enough for a short story. Maybe just a highly edited Wiki version?
“No, absolutely not.” He shut the Manila folder quickly, as if I were going to jump up and try to peek. The guy took neurotic to a whole other level.
Okay, the file wasn't that important. I needed to keep the peace and simply explain in better detail how I'd made an error in judgment. Be nice. My southern mother had always said you caught more bees with honey than vinegar. She had tried to drill it into my head since I was a small child. It wasn't something I'd come naturally to, that was for sure, but it was a valid tactic, even if that wasn't the lesson my mother had meant to instill.
“Harold, when I agreed to work for you, I was under the duress of seeing my dead body. You can understand how jarring that can be, right? I wasn't thinking clearly at all.” It sounded logical enough to me, but I wasn't sure if he'd ever had the pleasure of dying and his manner didn't scream naturally empathetic.
He cleared his throat and I could tell by the set of his mouth that I wouldn't like the next words. “I'm sorry, but that's not how things work here. Like I told you, there’s a mandatory one-month trial period. An active one-month.”
He leaned back in his chair and pushed his glasses up closer to his face. His almost black eyes, artificially enlarged from the lens, stared at me in a bit of an awkward way. I wasn't sure if there was a bite to follow up his bark but his magnified beady gaze sure made the situation less than desirable.
Still, beady gaze and all, I had to try one last time. Perhaps a different angle. Regardless of my record, he clearly thought I was an idiot; maybe that was the way to go. I had no problem playing a stooge if it got me out of here quickly.
“As you stated, I'm a transfer. You really don't want me. I'm a horribly slow learner. The mistakes I've made in my life, geesh, you'd squirm if you knew.” I twirled a finger in my hair for effect and wished I had some chewing gum to smack.
“Yes, I'm well aware.”
He was? Hey, wait a minute; I didn't think I'd done too badly for myself. What were these jerks writing about me in that file?
“Fate will help you with that.”
And just like that, I had bigger problems. I wasn't just stuck here; I was stuck with him. “The guy who helped me so far?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“It has to be him.” Harold threw his hands in the air, as if why am I bothering him? Not his orders.
“Then I'll work alone.”
I'd be clueless but peaceful. There was something wrong about that guy. There was something too bossy or too intense. I couldn't even describe exactly what it was about him that was too much, but it was.
Even the brief moment I'd actually been in my right mind around him, it was as if his presence exerted some sort of gravitational pull, stronger than a normal person’s. As if his intensity could throw me out of orbit. And I didn't want to go out of orbit. I had enough things to handle besides ping ponging around.
“Non-negotiable. I've got orders.” Harold folded his hands and rested them atop his desk, littered with paper.
“From who exactly?”
“The universe.” His chin notched up a hair.
“Would it be possible to speak to this universe person? I'm sure they'll understand that there is a personality conflict.” It was time to bump my complaint to upper management.
“No one speaks to the universe.”
“Then how do you know what to do?” I leaned in a little.
“Simple. Through my orders.” His eyes started to twitch.
“Which you get how?”
“My memos.”
“Then you can send a memo to the universe. I won't work with him.”
“I'll file your complaint but it won't matter. And don't forget, as I've already explained, it has to be an active month.”
Twenty-five days. I've dealt with worse for longer. One case in particular came to mind. The guy actually tried to bite me when we lost. Harold didn't seem inclined to bite and he didn't get into my personal space. I could deal with him.
On the other hand, Fate looked like he might be the biting sort.
“Do the last five days count toward the thirty? Time served and all?”
“Yes."
“These first days were highly unpleasant. Do you think I could get extra credit for those? Maybe, I don't know, you could knock off a day or two? Like they do in jail for good behavior?”He squinted his eyes and tilted his head. I was going to take that for a no.
